Germany 1970 in retrospect: we have outlived the ?Flower Power? movement and conquered the moon, society is riding a wave of optimism and enjoying an infatuation with technology. It seems anything is possible. Thanks to the invention of plastic, which makes our world more colourful and our lives easier. Against this backdrop, ASV-Stübbe embraces the designs of the Finnish architect, Matti Suuronen: the result is the Futuro home ? a strangely futuristic, Ufo-shaped, 4 metre high house made of polyester reinforced with fibreglass.
The 36 sq. metre circular house is accessed through a fold-down door and is entirely furnished with plastic furniture; it is planned as a vacation home that accommodates 8 guests comfortably and is on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as a case study in design. Roughly100 homes have been built over the years. But the oil crisis and the German Building Inspection Department thwarted the planned series production at the time: since the building inspectors were unable to calculate the area, no building permit could be issued.
The future is now: 35 years after the ASV prototype set the milestone, star designer Aisslinger, Professor of Design at the Karlsruhe Institute of Design, is planning serial production of the Futuro home.
